What ever happened to, “you learn to better yourself”? Today’s educational system is a piece of shit. People wonder why students kill themselves over school, depression is becoming more and more common among students, and why students leave their classes wondering: “What the hell did I just learn?” The reason is there is a ridiculous emphasis on grades and being better than the next man. For my entire life all I have heard my father say was “Get good grades to get into a good college, so you can get a middle-class job and be more successful than I was.” Fuck that. I want to learn subjects because I want to leave my class with knowledge that I will actually remember tomorrow. The problem with society is young people are being pressured to bust their asses in subjects they HATE so they will look good for their “dream college”. What ever happened to character? No one cares if you are a good person, kids don’t work on building their character…they work on building their resume. I am a student and I know what I am talking about. My parents cannot relate in any way, apparently students in America are receiving much larger amounts of homework than their parents did back in the day. People wonder why we have such a lag in the education system, the reason is that we are taught not to have creativity and study the “great men” before us. The point I am trying to make is schools are approaching teaching the wrong way. Don’t stunt our imagination; don’t force us to take classes just to load up a resume. Allow us to pursue our interests in a welcoming environment. How many kids look forward to school? NONE. Not even the brightest kids enjoy waking up early in the morning to get loaded with so much shit their brains are pushing against their skulls. I take four AP classes. There is only 1 class that I really “choose” to take because the teacher was amazing. The other 3 classes are just courses so a college will go “hey look at that poor kid trying to get our attention”. It’s all bullshit. The reason I am typing this essay is because I just had a conversation with my dad about my “school grades”. I got 2 C’s. Yea I’m not too trilled about it, but life goes on…right? WRONG. We students are becoming more and more paranoid from all the bullshit our parents are telling us. 2 C’s, in AP classes might I add, will turn me off to ANY college that even considered me eligible. This is not a healthy environment for a student to be in….with people breathing down their necks and assuming they can relate to the subject because they have “jobs”. Well, I want a job that I can enjoy so why should it not be the same for the classes? I mean if I learn what I want in the classes for the job I want to have, shouldn’t that count for something? Shouldn’t taking business courses in high school look better for a business school than taking an AP biology course? Also at my school we have had bomb threats. Now these kids knew they were going to get in trouble but did they think their lives would get ruined? HELL NO. They did not know, and still probably do not know, what the hell just happened. These kids, all sophomores and freshmen, are being used as examples to show people what happens when you do something serious like that. I agree the punishment was just, but the kids had no idea that would happen. Half the people I have talked to on the issue did not even know what it means to have a felony charge. It means their futures are completely destroyed. They will never get into a decent college, hell they would be lucky if a community college accepted them! Also, what employer would want to hire someone with a felony charge when there are MILLIONS of other applicants? Now if these kids knew what the repercussions of their actions would be then I too would chant “grab the rope lets hang these S.O.Bs”, but the kids DID NOT. THEY HAD NO IDEA THEY JUST THREW THEIR LIVES AWAY. That is why there needs to be a class that talks about laws, and it needs to be mandatory. Imagine what would happen to crime if the population was actually aware what could happen to them if they broke any laws, I sure would not want to do a bomb scare at my school if I knew I would loose my entire future in a matter of hours. Now I am not saying the kids are innocent in any way, but I am saying that they are naïve. And it’s shit like this, where people do not know all the information that pisses me off. People say “increase the minimum wage!” and “those damn Republicans giving tax cuts to big companies!”. They are IDIOTS. What happens when you increase the minimum wage? PEOPLE LOOSE JOBS. Let me give you a scenario…I own a store. I pay my employees 5 dollars an hour and I have 5 employees. They raise minimum wage to 6 dollars an hour. I can old afford to spend 25 dollars on wages… so I cut a worker. But big corporations will cut THOUSANDS just to maintain their profit margins. Is it bad the poverty level is 10,000 a year? YEA, but there are other ways to fixing it. Also with the tax cuts to big corporations…what do they do with the money? Hmmm I wonder. They spend it! They spend it on research, new plants/factories/etc. and they spend it on investments. This PRODUCES jobs! So please explain to me how that is a bad thing. Also the government is going about welfare the completely wrong way. People sit on their asses and wait for welfare checks? HELL NO. Listen Bush, put them to work. Have them shred the 9/11 commissions documents, I don’t care but MAKE THEM WORK FOR THEIR MONEY! The government can easily solve several problems at once… Homelessness, world hunger, and waste of farmers’ crops. We take the extra crops farmers would generally just throw out (the government actually pays farmers’ to do this to keep prices stable) and put them in massive silos. Then we take homeless people and put them in factories (JOBS JOBS JOBS). They then produce finished products, such as canned corn. We then take these products and give them to countries that need them in Africa. BOOM, WOW HOW DOES HE THINK OF THAT!? Its common sense, get some. Listen I did not put much thought in the construction of this, I was pissed off because my parents think I don’t know how to have a decent conversation when they repeat themselves every other sentence. I am just pissed off at how the world works. IT’S STUPID. If you don’t like this, well go blow a donkey but I’m open to some free-thinking minds out there.

I mostly agree with you. However, today's educational system is based on the fact that people are getting smarter. We must be well rounded because there is 1000 people that could be good at calculus and a school can only accept 100 of those. Then the only realistic way to determine the other worth is their grades in other classes. The homework situation is very bleak in america as most of it is simply busy work. Colleges will definitely take ur strength of schedule as they look at it and appluad you for taking AP classes and getting Cs while you could have gotten As in regular classes. I took four AP classes my junior year and 3 my senior year(current) and I have never been pressured by my parents. They took the approach that Ishould be responsible for my grades and I have only one B in my high school career and that was in 8th grade spanish which counts as a high school course. I think that is the only way for a student to truly be happy is if they are under a minimal amount of a stress because if it is too lazy the student will not want to work hard enough. The educational system today is solely focused on work rather than creativity which is certaintly a shame. I applaud you for your statement, "Well, I want a job that I can enjoy so why should it not be the same for the classes?" Once you realize this your life will be much happier. I could have gotten into some of those top tier schools but i realized I would not be happy there because it will be worse than school is now. That same pressure on pointless grades that I hate. Besides its a waste of money to spend 40k a year on ivy league if I will end up in the same grad or medical school after college if I go somewhere I have a full scholarship to. I am not going to get into the whole Bush and how the world works thing because I have now grown tired or typing. Tell me what ya think.
